NIPT (Harmony) What is it ?
Harmony Test- NIPT ( non-invasive prenatal testing)
The Harmony Test has been available in the UK since November 2012 . It is highly successful in screening for the three trisomies of Down’s Syndrome, Edwards Syndrome and Patau’s Syndrome ( Chromosome abnormalities)
How it Works
A sample of the mother’s blood is taken and sent off to a laboratory in London. The sample is examined by experts, using a more direct approach that streamlines the analysis and focuses on cfDNA from chromosomes that are flagged as notable. ( They will be looking at the baby’s DNA circulation in the mother’s blood stream)
This different approach offers more accuracy as it removes the random sequencing of cell free DNA that is the nature of MPSS (Massively Parallel Shotgun Sequencing) with results available within 5-7 days working days.
The Benefits of the Harmony Test
There are many benefits of the Harmony Test such as:
- High Accuracy
- Deeper Analysis of Chromosomes ( NT scan only looks at the Mother’s pregnancy hormones and proteins)
- Less than 4% Rate of “No Result” ( When this happens , we will do a free redraw and provide fresh samples to the laboratory)
- Low False Positive Rate of 0.1% in Cases Where Amniocentesis Proved Normal Following a High Risk Result
- Can Be Used for Twin Pregnancies and Pregnancies as a Result of Egg Donation
- The test result can also include baby’s gender
What the Harmony Test Doesn’t Do
There are a few results the Harmony Test doesn’t deliver for example it won’t:
- Test for Triploidy
- Suggest a Vanishing Twin
- Test for Microdeletions
Should I Have the Harmony Test?
If you are concerned about Downs syndrome or any of the other trisomies the Harmony Test can give you the information you seek early in your pregnancy, completely risk free. This flexibility puts many expectant mother’s minds at ease allowing them to take control while being early enough to explore the choices that may be considered following a concerning result.
The Harmony Test is also ideal for screening for trisomies in the cases of twins and egg donations.
The risk free nature of the test also makes it popular with those who simply want to put their mind at ease and enjoy the rest of their pregnancy without the uncertainty.
You can have the Harmony Test from as early as 10 weeks into your pregnancy.
