Up to 80% of people who contract COVID-19 will either have very few or no symptoms at all. This means the actual number of people who have had COVID-19 may be much higher than we know. 

Will this test confirm if I currently have COVID-19?

No, the COVID-19 Antibody test can only be administered 14 days after any symptoms have cleared up. If you have any symptoms of COVID-19 we ask that you do not attend any appointments and self-isolate in line with government advice.

How does a COVID-19 Antibody Test work?

The human immune system produces antibodies when it is fighting an infection. These antibodies remain are unique to each infection and can show whether someone has recovered from that infection recently. 

Ultrasound Direct is working with Future Health, one of the world’s largest and most accredited biobanks to provide the COVID-19 Antibody Test at clinics across the United Kingdom. Future Health has been performing antibody testing for various infections, at their laboratory in the UK for over a decade. 

All tests performed by Ultrasound Direct will be processed at the Future Health Biobank laboratory in Nottingham, UK to identify the presence of COVID-19 antibodies from a sample of blood. Your result will provide an indication whether or not you have been exposed to the COVID-19 virus in the past.

Please make sure you are well hydrated on the day of your appointment and wear a top which allows your arms to be exposed to above the elbow.

How much blood will be taken?
Unlike other tests which involve a finger prick: a blood sample must be collected by a trained healthcare professional in an EDTA tube.
Do I need to be symptom free for 10-14 days?
At least 14 days must have elapsed from the onset of symptoms.
How long will it take to get my results back?
Results will be sent to you within 3-5 working days directly from Future Health Biobank.
Who regulates the testing?
The test being used is validated by Abbott Laboratories and has been approved by the MHRA and Public Health England (PHE), when performed according to the instructions supplied with the test kit.
How long are you immune?
This is scientifically unknown at this time. The test indicates whether the patient has antibodies consistent with previous exposure to Covid-19. Detection of these antibodies does not confirm immunity to Covid-19 infection.
Having illness/ disease does this impact results?
See below for the limitations of the test:
  • Results should be used in conjunction with other data; e.g., symptoms, results of other tests, and clinical impressions.
  • Negative results do not rule out SARS-CoV-2 infection, particularly in those who have been in contact with the virus. Follow-up testing with a molecular diagnostic should be considered to rule out infection in these individuals.
  • Results from antibody testing should not be used as the sole basis to diagnose or exclude SARS-CoV-2 infection or to inform infection status.
  • Non-SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus strains, such as coronavirus HKU1, NL63, OC43, or 229E, have not been evaluated with this assay. In a population of patients with non-COVID-19 respiratory illnesses, no cross-reactivity has been observed.
  • Specimens from patients who have received preparations of mouse monoclonal antibodies for diagnosis or therapy may contain human anti-mouse antibodies (HAMA). Such specimens may show either falsely elevated or depressed values when tested with assay kits such as SARS-CoV-2 IgG that employ mouse monoclonal antibodies.
  • Heterophilic antibodies in human serum can react with reagent immunoglobulins, interfering with in vitro immunoassays. Patients routinely exposed to animals or to animal serum products can be prone to this interference, and anomalous values may be observed.
  • Rheumatoid factor (RF) in human serum can react with reagent immunoglobulins, interfering with in vitro immunoassays.
I’m pregnant: if I have antibodies will my baby have them too?
This is scientifically unknown at this time.
What does it mean if I have the antibody?
If there are antibodies in your blood, it means you have had Covid-19, and you may be immune to getting it again. But nobody knows what level of immunity is conferred, whether some people have an antibody response that gives them greater immunity than other people and how long that immunity lasts.
Who performs the test?
Your blood sample will be taken by qualified member of Ultrasound Direct staff in one of our clinics. It will be sent to Future Health Biobank who will perform the test, using the Abbott Architect i2000SR.
Is there an age limit?
Ultrasound Direct is only offering the COVID-19 Antibody Test to clients over 16.
Will my data be sent to anyone else?
Client data will be held by Future Health Technologies in accordance with GDPR.
What happens to the sample once it has been tested?
Samples are discarded into clinical waste and securely destroyed.
