Thyroid Profile Blood Test

This package is suitable if you’re experiencing symptoms that may be related to thyroid imbalance, such as persistent fatigue, unexplained weight changes, sensitivity to cold or heat, hair thinning, or changes in mood.

The blood tests assess thyroid hormone levels alongside thyroid antibodies, helping to identify underactive or overactive thyroid function and possible autoimmune thyroid conditions. The results can support a clearer understanding of thyroid health and help guide discussions about symptoms, monitoring or next steps with your healthcare provider.

This blood test checks for antibodies against thyroid peroxidase (TPO), an enzyme in the thyroid gland. These antibodies can be present when the immune system mistakenly attacks the thyroid.

This blood test measures the level of free thyroxine (FT4) in your blood. This is a hormone made by your thyroid gland that helps to regulate your metabolism, energy and other important body functions.

TSH or Thyroid stimulating hormone is a hormone made by your pituitary gland that tells your thyroid how much hormone to produce. This blood test measures your TSH levels and helps to assess how well your thyroid is working.

Preparing for your blood test

  • Hydrate: Drink plenty of water in the 24 hours before your blood test. This will make the blood draw easier.

  • Make sure the blood draw area is easily accessible: Wear loose clothing that allows access to both arms and hands.

  • If you're on anticoagulant medication, take it after the appointment: If this is not possible, you can take it before the appointment, if it's absolutely essential.

  • Let our clinic team know if you are nervous about needles: They will make sure you're calm and comfortable and do everything they can to make your blood draw quick and simple.

Frequently Asked Questions

It is not unusual for some bleeding to occur under the skin following your blood test and sometimes this can extend a little further around the puncture site.  If this causes you concern, check with your practice nurse.

Sometimes we cannot get a blood sample from you. This can be for many reasons, such as not being hydrated enough, feeling cold or having another blood test recently. We will always offer you another appointment so we can try again.
